About Us
During the Soviet occupation of Latvia (1940–1991), Latvian artists continued to create work while exiled abroad. The mission of the Global Centre for Latvian Art / Pasaules latviešu mākslas centrs (PLMC) is to recover, preserve, and exhibit this work in Latvia, along with contemporary Latvian art produced abroad. PLMC was established as a Latvian foundation in 2011 by its predecessor organization, The Global Society for Latvian Art / Pasaules latviešu mākslas savienība (PLMS), a US nonprofit founded in 2004 in the state of Illinois. PLMC is the only institution specifically tasked with preserving Latvian art created outside of Latvia.
The Centre is located in Cēsis, a medieval city nestled in the Gauja River National Forest, 85 km east of Rīga. Cēsis is home to a range of cultural institutions, including the Vidzeme Concert Hall and Gallery; the Cēsis City Gallery; one of the best-preserved medieval castle complexes in Europe; and many galleries, tech start-ups, shops, and restaurants.

Ripa Gallery
PLMC opened its first gallery 2014. Over €200,000 was contributed by individual and organizational donors to transform a part of the former Cēsis vocational school into an exhibition space named the Ripa Gallery in honor of major donors Jānis Ripa and his sisters.

Sīpoliņa Gallery
A few years later, PLMC launched a second gallery, named the Sīpoliņa Gallery, in honor of a major donation made by Anda Sīpoliņa, daughter of noted Latvian diaspora collector Leopolds Sīpoliņš.
The Collection
Since its founding, PLMC has developed a robust permanent collection of Latvian diaspora art, housed on the second floor of the Centre. The collection of approximately 2,000 works is currently undergoing a digitization project to broaden access to an international audience.

Exhibitions & Programming
PLMC offers new exhibitions throughout the year at its home in the heart of historic Cēsis, while also stewarding traveling exhibitions in partner venues throughout Latvia. Additionally, PLMC hosts concerts, discussions, lectures, artist residencies, and children’s activities. In 2024, PLMC initiated ArtWalk Cēsis, a seasonal, monthly city-wide multi-gallery tour.
PLMC is deeply grateful to the City of Cēsis for its significant support, and extends a heartfelt thank you to the organizations and individual donors who have contributed to make PLMC the largest Latvian diaspora art collection in the world.
